GaDOE John Hancock Award

The Georgia Department of Education has recognized Mary Lee Clark Elementary School with the 2024–2025 John Hancock Award for excellence in cursive writing instruction. The school earned the Proficiency Ribbon designation, marking it as one of the top-performing schools in the state for cursive proficiency.

The John Hancock Award honors schools that go above and beyond in teaching cursive writing, a skill that supports fine motor development, literacy, and cognitive growth. Mary Lee Clark Elementary joins 188 schools across Georgia to receive the Proficiency Ribbon, which is awarded to schools where at least 90% of students can write their name in cursive.

“This recognition is a reflection of the intentional focus Mary Lee Clark has placed on foundational literacy skills,” said Dr. Tracolya Green, Superintendent of Camden County Schools. “In Camden, we believe strong academic habits start early, and this award shows the impact of that belief in action.”

To qualify for the award, schools submitted portfolios showcasing student proficiency in cursive writing. This year, more than 300 schools applied statewide. In addition to those earning the Proficiency Ribbon, 93 schools received the more advanced Ribbon of Distinction, which requires students to write both their name and the Preamble to the U.S. Constitution in cursive.

“Our teachers and instructional coach have worked hard to make cursive instruction meaningful and engaging, and our students rose to the challenge,” said Mary Lee Clark Principal Maura Fegel. “This award highlights what happens when we set high expectations and give students the tools to reach them.”

Mary Lee Clark Elementary’s achievement highlights the school’s dedication to developing confident, literate learners equipped with timeless skills and prepared for future success.
